LAUGHING MATTERS – writing political comedy with Kate Smurthwaite

The serious matter of politics has long provided rich fodder for wags and comedians of all stripes. Join Kate Smurthwaite for a masterclass in the craft of the political barb.

Students will be introduced to techniques for writing political comedy and get to road-test their efforts same in a fun collaborative environment. There will be tutor-led discussion, analysis of successful political comedy, in class exercises and collaborative writing. This session is aimed at those with an interest in politics and a good sense of humour (obvs). Kate Smurthwaite is a left-wing, feminist, atheist, polyamorous comedian and activist. She performs stand-up comedy all over the UK and around the world. As if that weren’t enough, she is also a regular contributor to publications such as Cosmopolitan, The Guardian and The Independent. She also writes for the BBC Three political comedy show ‘The Revolution Will Be Televised’ and the UK’s leading political satire show ‘Have I Got News for You’? Phew!
