IT’S NOT THE CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS!

Paddy Cullivan and journalists Larissa Nolan and Karl Deeter discuss polarisation in politics and the rise of hysterical commentary.

‘May you live in interesting times’ goes the well-worn adage, and a cursory glance at social media sites can only confirm that we are indeed living through such an era. Never has the arena of political discourse felt quite so febrile, never has binary opposition on every possible topic felt so, well, normal. So, should we be keeping calm and carrying on or stepping on women and children as we scramble for places on the lifeboats. When the stiff upper lip has become a snarl, we need to ask is mass hysteria making you feel like YOU’RE the one going crazy? Do you long for the days where you could talk politics and still have a pint together afterwards? Do you watch commentators losing their minds over nothing and think: ‘It’s hardly the Cuban Missile Crisis!’? Well you’re right – it’s NOT the Cuban Missile Crisis! Just how much reaction counts as overreaction. Strap yourself in for a lively debate…
