Untold: The Daniel Morgan Murder with Peter Jukes…

Daniel Morgan and the Dark Arts: a murder mired in police corruption and media connections

Presented by Peter Jukes and Dee Meir.

Daniel Morgan was a British private detective. A family man who loved his job, he enjoyed a drink with his business partner, Jonathan Rees, at the Golden Lion pub in Syndenham, a district in south-east London on March 10, 1987, before heading to his car in the parking lot.

Daniel, then 37 years old, never made it home. His body was found in the pub car park with an axe embedded in the back of his head. Efforts had been made to make the assault look like a robbery – Daniel’s Rolex watch had been stolen – yet a sum of money, around £1,000, remained in his jacket pocket. The other item that was stolen? A notebook where Morgan had recorded findings on a drug-related police corruption case he was investigating. Southern Investigations, the detective agency he set up with Rees, was known to be working with the police and journalists at the now-defunct Murdoch tabloid “The News of the World’. Was there a link between his work and his death?

With an unsolved murder and convoluted claims of police and media corruption, the Daniel Morgan story holds a fascination for people desperate to discover the truth. In 2016, Peter Jukes, a journalist and dramatist, and Alastair Morgan, Daniel’s brother, successfully crowdfunded Untold, a 10-series podcast that was dubbed Britain’s ‘Serial’ and topped the podcast charts upon its release. The pair have now written a book on Daniel’s story and their findings and will publish in 2018.

Now, Daniel’s story is coming to Ireland with Peter bringing Untold to an Irish audience.
